Give Kids a Smile for Children's Dental Health Month: A call to action
A call to action to help low-income, uninsured children attain excellent oral health
Last November the Assistance League of Eugene decided to close the Children's Dental Center, located at Churchill High School after managing this program for 20 years. The result is that yearly 150 to 250 low-income uninsured children, will not be able to get dental care, unless we find community support. Maxine Proskurowski, Program Manager, Health Services, Eugene School District, and Linda Eichner, (retired Dental Coordinator for the Children's Dental Center for 20 years while the Clinic was managed by The Elks Club and then 20 years with the Assistance League), have worked closely together for 30 years to assure that children have access to dental care, and are now ready to take on new roles so that low-income children can once again get needed care. They are planning to screen children for both financial and dental need, set up appointments with volunteer dentists and arrange transportation, if needed. They will provide all the logistical support to bring the children to dental offices--now what is needed are volunteer dentists who are willing to provide care for 1 to 2 children/year. Please call Maxine at 541-790-7215 or email at firstname.lastname@example.org if you are interested. Children are the guardians of our future--let's keep them healthy.
