Organization Profile

The Lane County Dental Society is the professional organization for dentists in Lane County, Oregon. LCDS is organized to encourage the improvement of the health of the public, to promote the art and science of dentistry, and to encourage dental education. LCDS is the local component chapter of dentists who are also members of the Oregon Dental Association and the American Dental Association.
The LCDS Continuing Education Series programs are generally held in the fall, winter and spring. Program presentations are either morning sessions, all day sessions or evening sessions. Speakers are recruited to present programs of either  2 or 6 hours in length depending on the topic and format of the program.  Mornings and all day sessions are generally held on Fridays. Evening sessions are generally held on Tuesdays. All programs are produced and presented by LCDS in Eugene, Oregon. Lodging is provided for out of town speakers.
LCDS programs are attended by general practitioners and specialist dentists, dental hygienists, dental assistants, office staff, dental students and other guests. Audiences may range in size from 30 to 200 depending on the topic and speaker. Attendees pre-register for programs through the LCDS website.
Scope of Work
LCDS is accredited by the American Dental Association CERP program and the Academy of General Dentistry. Production and content of LCDS programs are subject to the requirements of these organizations. Speakers provide a detailed description of the program content to LCDS upon confirmation of the speaking engagement and coordinate with LCDS regarding program presentation materials. Speakers may submit companion articles, related to the program topic, for publication in the LCDS newsletter.
Topic Requirements
Program topics are based on the need for dentists to satisfy mandatory continuing education requirements as a condition of license renewal. The primary topic areas of interest include: Anesthesia, Pain Management, Sedation, Pharmacology, Basic Science, Endodontics, Electives, Medical Emergencies, Myofascial Pain/Occlusion, Operative (Restorative) Dentistry, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orthodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, Practice Management and Human Relations, Prosthodontics/Fixed and Removable, Implants, Orofacial Pain, Oral Medicine, Oral Diagnosis, Oral Pathology, Risk Management, Special Patient Care, Self-Improvement, and Esthetics/Cosmetic Dentistry.
Program speakers fees vary based on the length of the program and other speaker expenses paid. Speaker compensation is decided on an individual basis by the LCDS officers planning the program series for each year. Proposals can include speaker requirements for fees and expenses or can be discussed directly with the Executive Director at the time proposals are submitted. (See Decision-Making Process below.)
Speaker Promotion
LCDS programs are advertised in the bi-monthly LCDS newsletter and on the LCDS website at Program announcements and advertisements may also be circulated by LCDS to other Oregon dental societies and published in the Oregon Dental Association magazine. Speakers cannot promote or display advertisements of products or services during educational programs or as part of slides, abstracts or handouts. Speakers can provide such materials to LCDS for display outside of the program room.
Decision-Making Process
LCDS continuing education speaker proposals are reviewed by the LCDS president and selected on an ongoing basis by the Executive Council. Primary consideration is given to the proposed topic and content of the presentation, the reputation and expertise of the speaker in the topic area and the speaker’s experience and skill at public speaking.  Speakers are generally recruited and vetted 8 – 12 months in advance. Decisions regarding commitments, contracts and financial arrangements are in the sole discretion and responsibility of the Lane County Dental Society.
